If you do not qualify for a grant, the Warm Homes Loan Scheme is the main government-backed way to spread the cost of a battery. It is a loan, but a cheaper one than usual.
How it works
- A lender approved by DESNZ offers a personal unsecured or secured loan for eligible measures.
- The government pays lenders up to 20% of the loan (for a term of three years or more). That money must be passed on by lowering the nominal interest rate.
- There is no income threshold; any domestic property in the UK qualifies, for owner-occupiers and private landlords. The rules say the scheme complements Home Energy Scotland's own funding.
Loan caps (scheme rules, September 2026)
| Measure | Maximum loan |
|---|---|
| Battery storage (standalone or with solar) | £15,000 |
| Solar PV | £15,000 |
| Air source heat pump | £20,000 (before the Boiler Upgrade Scheme) |
| Air-to-air heat pump | £10,000 |
| Ground source heat pump | £35,000 |
An MCS-certified product and installer are required. Electric vehicle chargepoints are allowed only alongside solar or a battery.
What to ask a lender
- Do you offer the Warm Homes Loan Scheme, and for batteries specifically?
- What is the representative APR, and how much of the 20% has been passed on?
- Is the loan secured against my home?
- What happens if I repay early?

Check your eligibilityFrequently asked questions
Is the Warm Homes Loan Scheme a grant?
No. It is a loan from an FCA-authorised lender. The government pays lenders up to 20% of the loan so the interest rate can be lower.
Is the interest rate zero?
The rules do not promise zero. The government funding must be passed on by lowering the nominal interest rate, and each lender sets its own price.
How much can I borrow for a battery?
Up to £15,000 for a battery, standalone or with solar. Solar PV is also capped at £15,000 and heat pumps at £20,000 before the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
Do I need to be on a low income?
No. There is no income threshold, although lenders run their own affordability checks. Owner-occupiers and private landlords are eligible.
Can I get one now?
The consumer launch phase began from September 2026, with a second lender window in late 2026 and onboarding in early 2027. Each lender chooses which measures to offer, so ask them directly.
